ICC WORLD CUP (ODI) QUALIFYING TOURNAMENTS

England and Wales are going to host next year's Cricket World Cup (One Day Internationals). The qualifying round matches have recently been concluded in Zimbabwe in March 2018.One-time world's greatest team and twice world champion and once runners, the West Indies, have to play this tournament this year because according to the rules, the first 7 countries of ICC ODI Championship with the host country will directly qualify for the tournament. So India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and the hosts England will play directly in the World cup without playing any qualifying matches. But the West Indies and Zimbabwe had to play qualifying round. As two countries can qualify so Afghanistan and West Indies have got the chance in the 2019 World Cup as they were the finalists of the qualifying rounds. Zimbabwe who is also a test playing nation and also played in world cup for 9 times between  1983 to 2015 did not qualify this time and more surprising  for the first time in the history of the world cup, no Associate member country had qualified for  the competition, which is  a setback in the process of spreading cricket worldwide. Moreover, all the matches of this competition did not get the ODI Status. Some matches have been listed as a "List A" game, because all the full members and the first four Associate countries are entitled to play ODI under the rules of ICC (  https://pulse-static-files.s3.amazonaws.com/ICC/document/2017/09/24/4510678a-e031-4a9b-a402-397d4868adb6/ICC-Classification-of-Official-Cricket-Effective-1st-October-2017.pdf). Nepal and Netherlands are not given the status of ODI before this competition, so the matches played by these two countries are not considered as an ODI match.

After this competition, in the Super Six matches played apart from the four Tests playing countries, Scotland and the U.A.E allowed to play ODIs till 2022 and the winner of the playoffs the Netherlands won the status ODI till 2022 and Nepal  got the  ODI status for the first time and Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong have lost this qualification and lost their ODI status. Now they will have to come back in the World-Cricket League by playing in the Division-2.

After the 2015 World Cup, the decision was made by the ICC that the 2019 World Cup will be a  tournament of 10 teams. After that in 2017, when Afghanistan and Ireland got the opportunity to play test matches, the ICC World Cup Qualifying became a tournament of 12 teams. As a result, it was understood that at least two test playing nation will not be able to play world cup 2019.In this tournament, last four test playing countries  (West Indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ireland), the first four Associate Countries (Holland, Scotland, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea) and two teams from the Second Division (Nepal and U.A.E ) played in this qualifying tournament. Again, the ICC announced that all the matches of this competition should not be considered one-day internationals. The matches should be considered ODI when both of the teams have ODI status if not, it would be a “List A” match (if you are interested to know which matches got ODI status in this tournament, please check this link: https://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup/qualifier-fixtures)

In the Group A, West Indies won 4 matches, Ireland 3 and UAE won 2 matches and qualified for Super Six. The Netherlands and Papua New Guinea were eliminated and went to play the playoffs.
In the Group B while Zimbabwe and Scotland easily qualified for super six but Afghanistan had to sweat more to qualify. Nepal and Hong Kong were eliminated and went to play the playoffs. The Netherlands became 7th and Nepal became the 8th place team in the tournament and got a chance to play ODI till 2022.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan recovered in Super Six and they defeated West Indies in the final, although both  West Indies and Afghanistan had already Qualified for the World Cup.

Zimbabwe's 380/6 vs. Nepal is highest team’s score in the tournament (though the match was a “List A") and  Taylor’s (Zimbabwe) 457 is the highest run by a player in the competition. Scotland's McLeod made 157 vs. Afghanistan which is the highest individual score of the competition. Afghanistan's Mujibur Rehman and Rashid Khan took the maximum number of 17 wickets. Scotland's SM Sharif took the same number of wicket although he played less number of matches (17 out of 7 matches). Best Bowling figure of the tournament was by Rohan Mustafa (5/26) of UAE vs. the Netherlands.

Nepal, as the world's 27th team (country number 24th, because as many as three supra-national teams played ODI) got the opportunity of ODI status  in accordance with the rules of  spreading  of cricket by the ICC, but two test playing countries  did not qualify for the world cup  (one of them  played 9 times in the World Cup). Moreover, for the first time in the history of 44 years old World Cup Cricket no Associate Country have qualified this time. This is not matched with the development of the Cricket. Hope the ICC thinks and do the right thing for Cricket’s bright future.

BALL TAMPERING : THEN AND NOW

Steve Smith broke into tears after returning home. His tears are for putting a stain on the great game of cricket. After this emotional speech of Smith, Darren Lehmann decided to step down from the Australian cricket team's head coach position after the fourth test between Australia and South Africa gets over. He said this statement in teary eyes. The Cricketing World is not agreeing to the punishment given by Cricket Australia. Some are seeing this punishment as too harsh. Someone's asking for more hard punishment whereas, some are saying they have made a mistake and it will get corrected with time. Meanwhile, Bancroft has been banned from County cricket, while Hyderabad has named Kane Williamson in place of David Warner as their captain in IPL 2018. Meanwhile, the ICC thinks on the charges of ball tampering from a new perspective. They are thinking about a cricketers' committee, where the names of the committee are in favor of the likes of Anil Kumble, Richie Richardson, Allan Border.
In the meanwhile, we look a little into the past and see what happened earlier. Earlier these type of charges have been raised. But the first thing is to see the rule.

     The rules say ......

41.3  The match ball – changing its condition

41.3.1 The umpires shall make frequent and irregular inspections of the ball.  In addition, they shall immediately inspect the ball if they suspect anyone of attempting to change the condition of the ball, except as permitted in 41.3.2.

41.3.2 It is an offense for any player to take any action which changes the condition of the ball.

Except in carrying out his/her normal duties, a batsman is not allowed to willfully damage the ball.  See also Law 5.5 (Damage to the ball).

A fielder may, however

41.3.2.1 polish the ball on his/her clothing provided that no artificial substance is used and that such polishing wastes no time.

41.3.2.2 remove mud from the ball under the supervision of an umpire.

41.3.2.3 dry a wet ball on a piece of cloth that has been approved by the umpires.

41.3.3 The umpires shall consider the condition of the ball to have been unfairly changed if any action by any player does not comply with the conditions in 41.3.2.

41.3.4 If the umpires consider that the condition of the ball has been unfairly changed by a member or members of either side, they shall ask the captain of the opposing side if he/she would like the ball to be replaced.  If necessary, in the case of the batting side, the batsmen at the wicket may deputise for their captain.

41.3.4.1 If a replacement ball is requested, the umpires shall select and bring into use immediately, a ball which shall have wear comparable to that of the previous ball immediately prior to the contravention.

41.3.4.2 Regardless of whether a replacement ball has been chosen to be used, the bowler’s end umpire shall

- award 5 Penalty runs to the opposing side.

- if appropriate, inform the batsmen at the wicket and the captain of the fielding side that the ball has been changed and the reason for their action.

- inform the captain of the batting side as soon as practicable of what has occurred.

The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team.

41.3.5 If the umpires agree that in the match there has been any further instance by that team of unfairly changing the condition of the ball, they shall

41.3.5.1 repeat the procedure in 41.3.4.1 and 41.3.4.2.

If the further offense is committed by the fielding side, additionally the bowler’s end umpire shall

41.3.5.2 - direct the captain of the fielding side to suspend immediately from bowling the bowler who delivered the preceding ball; he/she shall not be allowed to bowl again in the match.

- inform the batsmen at the wicket and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of the reason for the action.

- if necessary, the over shall be completed by another bowler, who shall neither have bowled any part of the previous over, nor be allowed to bowl any part of the next over.(https://www.lords.org/mcc/laws-of-cricket/laws/law-41-unfair-play/)

In view of this law, seeing the whole thing, it can be understood that Michael Atherton (Eng) did not do the right thing in the England vs South Africa Test match in 1994. It was alleged that he had tampered with the condition of the ball. Although he denied the allegation but he was fined £2000.

Pakistan's Waqar Younis was charged in July 2000 and his 50% match fee was deducted.

In 2001 during South Africa vs India test match, Mike Dennis accused Sachin Tendulkar of ball tampering and he was suspended for one match. However, later ICC removed the suspension. His offense was that he was picking dirt off the ball without the umpire's permission.

India's Rahul Dravid was charged in 2004 for using a foreign mint substance on the ball and 50% of his match fee was deducted.

In 2006, a crazy hype was created surrounding the England and Pakistan Test match. Pakistan was penalized for ball tampering and England was given 5 runs extra. After Tea break, Pakistan later refused to take the field. Then the match was forfeited and England were declared the winner of the match. After that, however, ICC declared the match as a draw, but again MCC directly states that once the results are announced, there is no right to change that result. Finally, after a lot of controversy in 2009, England were declared the winner of the match by ICC.

In 2010, Stuart Broad and James Anderson were accused of bruising the ball with boot spikes.  Although no punishment was given but Nasser Hussein blamed them for their abusive behavior.

That year Sahid Afridi, former Pakistan Captain, was suspended for two Twenty20 matches, on charges of ball tampering as he was biting the seam of the ball.

In the 2012 Australian bowler Peter Siddle has named for same allegations though it has not been proved. Between 2013 and 2014 twice Philander and du Plessis (both South Africans) were accused and after that this Sandpaper Gate controversy surrounding Smith, Warner, and Bancroft in 2018.

In fact, this work has been used for a long time to hold reverse swings (in the grassless fields) and to keep the shine of the ball (in the grassy field). Even today with so many cameras, it is very easy to do this from some fielding positions without getting noticed. Naturally, this whole thing has shaken the cricketing world and is making everybody think of this situation.

BALL TAMPERING : A SHAMEFUL INCIDENT IN A GENTLEMAN'S GAME

Ball tampering. Again shook the Cricket world. Unbelief has created again. This time Australia was guilty. Let's see what happened.
On 24th March, on the third day of the third Test against South Africa, an Australian player Bancroft found with a yellow color paper in his hand. The first time it was noticed by the TV umpire and it was reported to field umpire. When they asked the players, the team captain reached there. However, captain Smith acknowledged the responsibility of ball-tampering in the press conference and he confessed that his teammates also knew it. The whole world of cricket was shocked due to this incident.
After that, the ICC quickly suspended Smith for one test and cut off his 100% match fee and 75% match fees of  Bancroft with three demerit points. But no one was very happy with this mere punishment.  On the other hand, ex-players criticized this decision. Stuart Broad expressed suspicion about the reverse swing of all the bowlers during the time of the ashes, which was not possible to do at that time. Harbhajan Singh mentioned the incident of 2001 and 2008, he questioned why only one match exile? In the meantime, before the end of the match, Australia's Cricket Board removed Smith and Warner from the captaincy and vice-captaincy. Again, Shane Warne, Gilchrist and the West Indies' Holding have criticized the point that it would have been better if the match was over. But during this time, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull intervened. Under his pressure Cricket Australia finally formed the inquiry committee. Again, former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke has directly criticized Smith. Then the question arises; can they (Warner and Smith) play the IPL? Rajasthan has announced that they will wait for the decision of ICC.
Smith then left the Rajasthan Royals captaincy; Rajasthan announced the post for Ajinkya Rahane. Although Hyderabad did not give any decision. Already the Australian media tagged Warner as responsible for the whole incident. But John Buchanan and Ian Botham had a doubt against coach Darren Lehmann. After this, the MCC will open up about the mindset of the cricketers and declared that the matter will be discussed at the next meeting.
Already it is known to the fact, the former cricketer and commentator Fanny D'Villiers expressed suspicion about the reverse swing before starting 30 overs in Australia, and he asked the cameraman to watch the matter seriously.  In fact, in his cricket life, many times he swung the ball reverse, so it was curious for him. Fanny informs radio that in the Cape Town, unlike Pakistan, the pitch is not a crack one, so it is impossible to reverse the ball before 30 overs.
Steve Waugh apologized and urged the players to return to the game early and also to study Australia's "Spirit of Cricket". Cricket Australia's CEO James Sutherland apologized to the world and told Smith and Warner to return to the country.  He reached South Africa in the meantime. There is anger in the team because even in the controversial Test when the team is defeated, Warner was seen enjoying with his friends. After that, teammates have demanded to keep  Warner in another hotel.
Eventually, Cricket Australia declares that they suspended Smith and Warner for one year and Bancroft for nine months.  BCCI then expelled these two players from the IPL. Sutherland said that they (i.e. Smith and Warner) were using that semiconductor paper to do the shameful act. And also these three players must compulsorily serve 100 hours in community cricket for social welfare and can play club cricket even if they are not in the first class. It is known that Warner was the main person for this massacre and Lehmann did not know anything about the plan. It has been said that either Smith or Bancroft may become Captain if public opinion goes with them but Warner will not get the captaincy anymore. Shane Warne has said that it is a big punishment for the guilt but Sachin Tendulkar has supported the punishment and Allen Border supported the standpoint of Daren Lehman but in his twit, Peterson gave a number of smileys about Lehman.

It is an unforgettable incident but after Bradman age, Smith has the highest average in tests (more than 61).So it is very hard to believe that he is connected in a shameful act like this.

Wasim Jaffer : the man who never forget

Wasim Jaffer completed 18000 runs as the sixth batsman in the history of Indian Cricket. Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Vijay Hazare have shown this credence. With the  286 in the final of Irani Trophy (i.e. Zal Irani cup), now he is on 18110, only 630 runs short from  Vijay Hazare's 18740.  Not only that he has broken the record of Gundappa Viswanath's highest run in Irani trophy. Vichy's  1001 run is now past.Jaffer is now 1009. And not only that his 53rd century is also 8th highest in India.

As a Mumbai and west zone team player, Jaffer played 31 test matches for India between 2000-2008, scored 1944 runs with 5 centuries including 2 double ton. When he joined Vidarbha Ranji team, he never thought that again he would get an option to play Ranji final, became a member of Ranji champion team again and also able to play Irani trophy.

He is now 40 and still considered as one of a dangerous batsman in Indian domestic cricket.
