England and Wales are going to host next year's Cricket World Cup (One Day Internationals). The qualifying round matches have recently been concluded in Zimbabwe in March 2018.One-time world's greatest team and twice world champion and once runners, the West Indies, have to play this tournament this year because according to the rules, the first 7 countries of ICC ODI Championship with the host country will directly qualify for the tournament. So India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and the hosts England will play directly in the World cup without playing any qualifying matches. But the West Indies and Zimbabwe had to play qualifying round. As two countries can qualify so Afghanistan and West Indies have got the chance in the 2019 World Cup as they were the finalists of the qualifying rounds. Zimbabwe who is also a test playing nation and also played in world cup for 9 times between 1983 to 2015 did not qualify this time and more surprising for the first time in the history of the world cup, no Associate member country had qualified for the competition, which is a setback in the process of spreading cricket worldwide. Moreover, all the matches of this competition did not get the ODI Status. Some matches have been listed as a "List A" game, because all the full members and the first four Associate countries are entitled to play ODI under the rules of ICC ( https://pulse-static-files.s3.amazonaws.com/ICC/document/2017/09/24/4510678a-e031-4a9b-a402-397d4868adb6/ICC-Classification-of-Official-Cricket-Effective-1st-October-2017.pdf). Nepal and Netherlands are not given the status of ODI before this competition, so the matches played by these two countries are not considered as an ODI match.
After this competition, in the Super Six matches played apart from the four Tests playing countries, Scotland and the U.A.E allowed to play ODIs till 2022 and the winner of the playoffs the Netherlands won the status ODI till 2022 and Nepal got the ODI status for the first time and Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong have lost this qualification and lost their ODI status. Now they will have to come back in the World-Cricket League by playing in the Division-2.
After the 2015 World Cup, the decision was made by the ICC that the 2019 World Cup will be a tournament of 10 teams. After that in 2017, when Afghanistan and Ireland got the opportunity to play test matches, the ICC World Cup Qualifying became a tournament of 12 teams. As a result, it was understood that at least two test playing nation will not be able to play world cup 2019.In this tournament, last four test playing countries (West Indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ireland), the first four Associate Countries (Holland, Scotland, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea) and two teams from the Second Division (Nepal and U.A.E ) played in this qualifying tournament. Again, the ICC announced that all the matches of this competition should not be considered one-day internationals. The matches should be considered ODI when both of the teams have ODI status if not, it would be a “List A” match (if you are interested to know which matches got ODI status in this tournament, please check this link: https://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup/qualifier-fixtures)
In the Group A, West Indies won 4 matches, Ireland 3 and UAE won 2 matches and qualified for Super Six. The Netherlands and Papua New Guinea were eliminated and went to play the playoffs.
In the Group B while Zimbabwe and Scotland easily qualified for super six but Afghanistan had to sweat more to qualify. Nepal and Hong Kong were eliminated and went to play the playoffs. The Netherlands became 7th and Nepal became the 8th place team in the tournament and got a chance to play ODI till 2022.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan recovered in Super Six and they defeated West Indies in the final, although both West Indies and Afghanistan had already Qualified for the World Cup.
Zimbabwe's 380/6 vs. Nepal is highest team’s score in the tournament (though the match was a “List A") and Taylor’s (Zimbabwe) 457 is the highest run by a player in the competition. Scotland's McLeod made 157 vs. Afghanistan which is the highest individual score of the competition. Afghanistan's Mujibur Rehman and Rashid Khan took the maximum number of 17 wickets. Scotland's SM Sharif took the same number of wicket although he played less number of matches (17 out of 7 matches). Best Bowling figure of the tournament was by Rohan Mustafa (5/26) of UAE vs. the Netherlands.
Nepal, as the world's 27th team (country number 24th, because as many as three supra-national teams played ODI) got the opportunity of ODI status in accordance with the rules of spreading of cricket by the ICC, but two test playing countries did not qualify for the world cup (one of them played 9 times in the World Cup). Moreover, for the first time in the history of 44 years old World Cup Cricket no Associate Country have qualified this time. This is not matched with the development of the Cricket. Hope the ICC thinks and do the right thing for Cricket’s bright future.
