After 20 years, again Sri Lanka organized a cricket tournament ‘Nidahas trophy’. Last time in 1998, the Island country from Indian ocean celebrated their 50th years of independence like the other neighbouring countries of the sub-continent, organized the tournament in O.D.I format. At that time India won the tournament. In the final Ganguly –Tendulkar added 252 runs for the first wicket partnership which was a world record at that time.
Now Sri Lanka celebrated their 70th years of independence and re-organized the tournament. Now it is a 20-20 format, a triangular like the old one, but this time Bangladesh replace New Zealand.
India (who send a comparatively second or third or fourth eleven) and host country played an inaugural match in Colombo on 6th March 2108. Shikhar Dhawan played beautiful innings (90 off 49, including 6 sixes and the same number of four), but India scored only a handful 174/5. Sri Lanka completed the target with 9 balls remaining, Just because of Kushal Perera (66 off 37) and Thisara Perera (23 off 10).
On the 8th, India recovers their feat, defeated Bangladesh, firstly restricted themselves 139/8 only, Unadkat and Vijay Shankar bowled really well (3/38 and 2/32 respectively), then through the batting of Dhawan (55 off 43) and Manish Pandey (27 off 19) completed the target in 18.4 overs.
Bangladesh created havoc when they reached the target 215 in 19.4 overs. Although both the Kushals scored 50+ (Mendis 57, Perera 74) but the batting of Musfiqur Rahim (72 of 35) helped to reach B’desh to complete the target in 19.4 overs. Other Bangla Batsman also helped him such as Tamim (47 off 29), Liton (43 off 19) and Mahamudullah (20 off 11).
India easily won the next two matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma scored 89 off 61 against Bangladesh, and Karthik scored 39 off 25 against Sri Lanka while Pandey also scored 42 off 31 against Sri Lanka.
The last match before the Final was so vital. Winner of the match played against India in the final. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first, restricted Sri Lanka at 159/7. Sri Lanka lost their 5th wicket when they were only 41. But from that moment both Perera tackled the situation by adding 97 runs for the sixth wicket partnership sparing 61 balls. Thisara scored 58 off 37 and Kushal 61 off 40. Mustafizur claimed two wickets for B’desh.
Bangla Batsman continuously tried to keep scoring at par but they also lost the wickets into a regular interval. Tamim scored 50, although he played 42 balls. At the last over Bangladesh needed 12 off 6. First, two balls were bouncers which created a controversy. The Bangla team claimed both the balls No ball due to height but the umpire did not respond to it. Some of the Lankan and Bangla players involved in a bitter argument. Anyhow, ball number 5 went for a six by Mahmudullah (43 off 18) and Bangladesh won the match by two wickets, and now they started “snake or Nagin dance” (somehow they got inspiration from old rural Bengali folk theatre “bender meye Jyotsna.”) which also created a controversy. Broken glasses were found in the Bangladesh dressing room.
The total vegetarian tournament suddenly converted into a non-veg. Bangladesh supporters started to dream of their first ever major tournament win. They also wanted to take a revenge of Bengaluru match and the quarter-final of 2015 world cup.
India won the toss and elected to bowl first, restricted Bangladesh on 166/8. Sabbir Rehman scored 77 off 50. Chahal was fabulous (4-0-18-3).
One stage India was 83/2 (9.2overs). It was completely easy for India. They needed 84 off 64, eight wickets in hand. But suddenly the whole scenario was changed, next 24 balls they added only 15 runs and lost 2 wickets, especially captain Rohit Sharma (56 off 42), after whose departure Cacophony broke out in the ground - the Bangladeshis going wild, shouting, screaming with Nazmul Islam doing the “Nagin dance”. But next two overs India again fought back, got three boundaries off nine balls and before 17th over another two… but scoring was not at par with the asking rate. At the end of the 18th overs, India were 133/5, needed 34 off 12.
Then The “Thalaiva” or the “Rajinikanth” of Indian Cricket appeared in the scenario, to play a “Moti Nandi” kind of innings, tagged as a re-birth of ‘Karthik’ (Phoenix?), hit a six ofthe first ball of Rubell, the next one a four, third one also a six, fourth ball was beaten , an appeal by Mushfiqur, but ignored by the umpire, then a two, and the last one again a four, got 22 off 6, India then needed 12 in the last over.
Saumya Sarkar came in the last over, faced by Vijay Shankar (another cricketer from TN like Karthik), first one was a wide, next one missed by Vijay, next one he took a single, then Karthik also took a single, suddenly the drinks came for Bangladeshis, India needed nine off three.
After the drinks, Vijay hit a boundary and tried an over boundary the very next ball, but it was relay catch taken by Mehedi Hasan (surely nobody confused with the singer), now India needed 5 runs from the last ball. Karthik on the strike and he hit the ball over the boundary for a six and India became the champion. One can easily remember the incident of Sharjah in ’86-’87 between India and Pakistan final match when Miandad hit a six in the last ball of Chetan Sharma.
India with her second/third/ fourth eleven, won an international 20-20 tournament against a full-fledged senior national team of two test playing countries, proved their strength in the field of cricket. Do not forget, they simultaneously organized three teams, excluding this official, Two for the Deodhar trophy and One for Zal Irani Cup and also give some rest to their maximum number of regular players, because of the hectic schedule of cricket.
Now, hope all of you enjoy the article. We will be back with some more updates. Till then, Goodbye.
